Tea reduces stress

German
researchers found that drinking black tea lowers stress
hormone levels. In the study, volunteers who had been
drinking 4 cups of black tea daily for a month,
experienced a 20 percent greater drop in cortisol (stress
hormone) levels, after a high stress event.
To
enjoy the stress reduction benefits of tea, it has to be
made the way Arabs make it. It is called ‘Sulaimani’.
Arabs do not add milk to tea. The beneficial effect of
tea, relaxing the arteries is completely wiped out when
you add milk, the German researchers point out.
Earlier it was thought that milk does not interfere
with catechins, the healthful chemicals found in tea. But
the German researchers found that casein, the proteins
found in milk, attach themselves to EGCG (Epi Gallo
Catechin Gallate), the healthful catechins found in tea
and block them from relaxing the arteries.
The health benefits of herbal tea and green tea are
well-known. Healthy beverages such as herbal tea and green
tea are prepared without milk and sugar. Those who find it
difficult to drink tea without milk and sugar can try
adding one or two teaspoonfuls of honey and a few drops of
lemon.

Soy foods can reduce
sperm count
Eating just half a serving of soy based foods
everyday, can reduce the sperm count significantly,
according to researchers from the Harvard School of Public
Health.
“What we found was men that consume the highest
amounts of soy foods in this study had a lower sperm
concentration, compared to those who did not consume soy
foods,” said Dr. Jorge Chavarro of the Harvard School of
Public Health.
Soy contains phytoestrogen, a plant form of female
sex hormone estrogen. Dr. Chavarro and his colleagues
analyzed the effect of 15 soy-based foods such as tofu,
tempeh, soy sausage, soy milk, soy cheese, soy yoghurt,
soy ice cream, soy bacon, burgers & mince, soy drinks,
powders & energy bars.
The researchers divided the men into different groups
according to their soy consumption levels. Men in the
highest intake group ate half a serving (equivalent to
half cup of soy milk or half serving of tofu) per day.
The findings was striking. Men in the highest intake
group had 41 million sperm per milliliter less than men
who ate no soy foods. (Normal sperm count ranges from 80
million to 120 million per milliliter. A sperm count of 20
million and below is considered low).
The researchers also found that association between
soy foods and lower sperm count was stronger in overweight
men. “Men who are overweight or obese tend to have higher
levels of androgen- produced estrogen. They are converting
a male hormone into a female hormone in their fat. The
more body fact you have, the more estrogen you produce in
your fat,” explained Dr. Chavarro.
The study suggests that soy foods could have some
deleterious effect on the reproductive system, especially
on sperm production and fertility.

Mouth is the dirtiest place

People
who have bleeding gums, people who have poor dental
hygiene and people who are not brushing their teeth
regularly, could be increasing their risk of heart
disease, according to a new research by the University of
Bristol and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
“The mouth is probably the dirtiest place in the
human body,” said Dr. Steve Kerrigan from the royal
College of Surgeons. The mouth harbours up to 700
different types of bacteria. “If you have an open blood
vessel from bleeding gums, bacteria will gain entry to
your bloodstream. When bacteria get into the bloodstream,
they encounter tiny fragments called platelets that clot
blood when you get a cut. By sticking to the platelets,
bacteria cause them to clot inside the blood vessel,
partially blocking it. This prevents the blood flow back
to the heart and we run the risk of suffering a heart
attack.”
By sticking to the platelets and making the platelets
clump together, bacteria can defend themselves in two
ways. They can hide from antibiotics. And they can shield
themselves against attack by immune cells.
In the past, aggressive antibiotic therapy was
effective in treating such conditions, but this treatment
option is becoming less effective as bacteria are evolving
into stronger organism and becoming more resistant to
antibiotics.
The research points out that you may be slim, fit and
eating healthy food but if your don’t have good dental
hygiene, you are increasing your risk of heart attack.

Menthol is used as a
bait to trap smokers
Tobacco
companies routinely manipulate levels of menthol so that
their cigarettes prove more appealing and less harsh to
new users, according to researchers at Boston University
School of Public Health.
Menthol is a chemical that has an effect akin to
anesthesia. Menthol activates cold receptors in the nose,
throat and lung masking the harshness of tobacco and
easing throat pain for first-time smokers. Harvard
researchers report that nearly 44 percent of adolescents
who smoke chose menthols. There is evidence that menthol
intensifies the effect of nicotine, the primary addictive
agent in cigarettes. Once hooked, menthol smokers may find
it harder to quit than other cigarette users, said Terry
Pechacek, a specialist in smoking and its health
consequences at the Centre for Disease Control and
Prevention.
The researchers quoted an internal memo from
R.J.Reynolds Tobacco Company which summarized the benefits
of menthol cigarettes. “Smoother, more refreshing tobacco
taste. Such a product could be a proven winner among 18 to
24 year-olds.”
“It really demonstrates that menthol is playing a
major role in maintaining cigarette consumption and
especially in recruiting and supporting addiction among
youth and young adults,” said Dr. Michael Siegel, a
researcher at the Boston University School of Public
Health.
“As you always find when you go digging into the
industry documents, the companies are very smart and very
thorough and don’t do anything by accident. This is a very
important element of cigarette marketing and design,” said
Stanton Glantz, a professor at the University of
California at San Francisco. This wilful pattern of action
by tobacco companies can only be remedied by a government
ban, Glantz said.

Copper-bottomed
cookware for safety and hygiene

It
is well- known that Vibrio, a type of bacteria is
responsible for a number of food poisoning cases. The
Asians eat a lot of shell fish and raw fish and it carries
a high risk of food poisoning due to vibrio bacteria.
Korean scientists have found a simple and effective way to
tackle the vibrio bacteria. The Korean scientists placed a
brass (alloy of copper and zinc) plate at the bottom of
the fish tank and eliminated the risk almost completely.
The researchers found that copper ions from the brass
plate killed 99.99% of the vibrio bacteria within 40
hours. When brass- plate was placed at the bottom of the
fish tank, the copper ions from the brass- plate, killed
the bacteria and kept the fish free from contamination.
The remaining copper ions were absorbed by the sand,
preventing the fish from absorbing them. It ensures that
the excess copper is not consumed by the people.
Traditionally, Asians use copper-bottomed cookware
for taste and hygiene. The Korean research has established
that using copper-bottomed cookware not only ensures taste
and hygiene, it ensures safety from food poisoning as
well.

Traditional herbal
medicine is effective against pancreatic cancer cells
Researchers at the Kimmel Cancer Centre at
Jefferson in
Philadelphia
have found that thymoquinone, an extract of nigella sativa
seed (also known as black seed and black cumin seed),
blocked pancreatic cancer cell growth and killed the
pancreatic cancer cells by enhancing the process of
programmed cell death.
Dr. Hwyda Arafat, MD,PhD, associate professor of
surgery at Jefferson Medical College and her colleagues
found that adding thymoquinone killed approximately 80
percent of the cancer cells.
Using a human pancreatic cell line, the researchers
demonstrated that thymoquinone increased p53, a gene that
suppresses tumour and Bax, a gene that promotes programmed
cell death, while decreasing bcl-2, a gene that blocks the
death of cancer cells.
Black seed and black seed oil have been traditionally
used by millions of people in Asia and the Middle East for
improving digestive and respiratory health and for
improving immunity to diseases. Black seed looks similar
to sesame seed but is black in colour as its name
suggests.

Happiness
can reduce breast cancer risk
Breast
cancer is the most frequent malignant disease among women.
In the United States, every third cancer is diagnosed as
breast cancer. In
Europe, breast cancer has become the commonest cancer diagnosed
overall.
While adverse life events such as death of a close
family member or divorce can increase a woman’s risk of
developing breast cancer, positive feelings such as
happiness and optimism can reduce the risk of developing
breast cancer, according to a study conducted at the
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
Glaser and Kiecolt in their review of experimental
in-vivo and in-vitro studies, explained how psychological
factors are associated with immune dysfunctions and the
development of malignant cells. These studies took into
account the type and severity of the event, the effect of
accumulated events and the burden of the psychological
stress developed by the event. These studies provide some
evidence of the pathways through which psychological
stress could contribute to the increase of cancer risk.
Several risk factors have been documented in the
scientific literature. Among them are: family history,
radiation exposure, androgenic estrogens, nutrition and
diet habits, smoking, alcohol consumption, lack of
physical activity, lack of breast feeding or short term of
breast feeding and social status.
