How to be armed and ready for exams?

‘Exams are around the corner and I haven’t prepared a word.’ A common thought travelling inside the minds of several students only to pull them into despair and stress. Like all problems this one too comes with a solution…a solution not in the hands of Professor Google but in your hands…
Therefore, its time to learn the various means, modes and measures to centralize your exam tackling powers-

1. Be the early bird that catches the worm

Begin your exam preparation early on and do not leave it until the last minute. Start your preparation even before the lessons are completed in the class by reading about the topic regularly. Be prompt about exam preparation and stressors would no longer plague your memory recall.

2. Pull up your socks…

Take responsibility for your actions. Develop a strong locus of control and have the conviction that your academic trajectory is in your hands alone. We are not made by our circumstances but by our choices and so our choices will ultimately outline our career trajectory. The first step to building that trajectory is to be accountable for what you did, and did not do. From day 1 onwards, start preparing, keep practicing and finally victory will be yours. Utilise the resources available at your school, the internet, library or anything at all at your disposal to strengthen your understanding of your subject.

3. No more FOMO

Why FOMO when you are using social media to explore the intriguing world of genetic codes and algebraic expressions? Be part of those social media communities where you can exercise and strengthen your brain power. Of course, this should not be done on the day before the exam, but over the course of the year.

4. Practice, Practice, Practice….

Practice till you ache….that’s the intensity required to taste success. As Simone Biles said ‘Practice creates confidence. Confidence empowers you’. So, empower yourself to combat exams by practicing regularly.

5. Don’t starve to failure….

Eat healthy foods during your exam week. Even if you have the occasional cravings for junk food which can deplete your attention skills, try to consume more protein-based foods like Nuts and pulses. Don’t forget to add broccoli and walnuts into the mix.

6. Arrange your study space….

It’s important to organise your study environment. Trying to study in a chaotic arrangement would probably affect knowledge acquisition. According to several investigations, environment greatly influences our mood and cognitive processes. Why, even the colour of the walls and arrangement of the furniture too can influence our moods! So, it’s advisable to keep rooms clean when we are in the exam preparation process.

7. Teach others or yourself

Organise sessions where you can teach the concepts to others. Maybe you can have group sessions where each member conducts classes in turns. If that’s not possible, devote time to describe the topics to yourself just like how a teacher would.

8. All learners are unique and are not made the same….

All learners are unique and are not made the same…. Some of us respond better to visual representations while some prefer auditory sources of information. Pick the mode that works best for you to increase your knowledge uptake. If you prefer reading and writing as opposed to listening to podcast like an auditory learner, then write down notes and read your topics regularly. On the other hand, if you prefer, visual cues like flow charts and diagrams, the use those to increase your grasp over your subject.

9. No shame in asking for help

Ask and you shall find answers. Do not let ego and arrogance cause you to stumble. Ask for help as and when required-it could be your siblings, friends, teachers, or classmates.

10. Sleep well!

Sleeping well is key to strengthening the information gained and, very importantly it plays a crucial role in information retrieval. Therefore, ensure you get proper sleep before your exam so that you won’t be drowsy and croggy while writing the paper.
So, try to follow these steps to ensure a smooth ride on your exam days.
